Filter Glossary
Every filter, explained. Search any term to understand exactly what it means and how we evaluate it.
Allergen Safe
Filters designed for diners with food allergies, intolerances, and dietary restrictions. Yo Slice takes allergen safety seriously — we want everyone to find a safe, delicious pizza. Restaurants can share their specific cross-contamination protocols directly on their profile.
Gluten-Free
The restaurant offers a gluten-free crust option. This is essential for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. Always confirm cross-contamination protocols with the restaurant directly, as kitchen environments vary.
Dairy-Free Crust
The crust ingredients do not contain dairy. This means a dairy-free pizza is achievable by simply ordering without cheese — the crust, sauce, and toppings are all dairy-free. A great option for lactose-intolerant diners or those avoiding dairy who still want an authentic pizza experience.
Non-Dairy Cheese
The restaurant offers non-dairy cheese alternatives (such as vegan mozzarella or plant-based cheese). This allows dairy-avoiding diners to enjoy a fully loaded pizza with cheese — no need to skip it. A standout feature for anyone who thought they had to give up cheesy pizza.
Dairy-Free
The restaurant can accommodate a fully dairy-free pizza. This may be achieved through a dairy-free crust (order without cheese) or non-dairy cheese options. Look for the "Dairy-Free Crust" and "Non-Dairy Cheese" badges to understand exactly how they accommodate it.
Cauliflower Crust
The restaurant offers a cauliflower-based crust as a lower-carb, vegetable-forward alternative. Cauliflower crusts are often gluten-free as well, but always verify if cross-contamination is a concern.
Vegan Options
The restaurant offers pizzas that contain no animal products — no dairy cheese, no meat toppings, with plant-based alternatives available. A fully vegan pizza experience from crust to toppings.
Allergy Info
A free-text field where the restaurant or Yo Slice editorial team notes specific allergy accommodations, cross-contamination policies, or ingredient details that don't fit into the standard allergen filters. Always read this carefully if you have a severe allergy.
Cross-Contamination Protocols
Detailed descriptions provided by the restaurant explaining how they prevent cross-contamination for dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan orders. This includes information like whether they use separate work areas, dedicated utensils, or dedicated prep stations. While these protocols are shared in good faith by the restaurant, always contact them directly to confirm current practices if you have a severe allergy or celiac disease.
Topping Generosity
Our proprietary scale measuring how many toppings you'll find per slice. Based on pepperoni and sausage counts.
Light
1–2 toppings per slice. A lighter hand — the toppings are present but sparse. You'll see more crust than coverage.
Balanced
3–4 toppings per slice. A measured, even application where every bite has toppings but the crust still plays a starring role.
Generous
5–6 toppings per slice. A hearty, abundant application. You won't be hunting for toppings — they're everywhere.
Slammed
7+ toppings per slice. Maximum density. The pizza is loaded to the point where the toppings may slide off if you're not careful. For those who want it all.
Crust Style
The foundational style and character of the pizza crust.
Thin
A thin, often crisp crust. Less dough means the toppings and sauce take center stage. Can range from cracker-crisp to slightly pliable.
Thick
A thicker, breadier crust with more dough. Hearty and filling, often with a soft interior and crisp bottom.
Detroit
A rectangular pizza with a thick, airy crust with crispy, caramelized cheese edges. Baked in blue steel pans. A Midwest icon.
Deep Dish
A tall, deep-pan pizza with layers of crust, cheese, and a chunky tomato sauce on top. Associated with Chicago style.
Neapolitan
A thin, soft, blistered crust cooked quickly at very high heat (often wood-fired). Simple, fresh ingredients. Originates from Naples, Italy.
Sicilian
A thick, rectangular crust with a spongy, airy interior. Often baked with cheese under the sauce.
Tavern
A thin, square-cut crust, often cut into party-style squares. Light and snackable — traditionally served in Midwest taverns and bars.
Stuffed
A deep-dish-style pizza with a top layer of crust over the fillings, essentially a pizza pie. Deep, rich, and filling.
Sauce Style
The character and flavor profile of the pizza sauce.
Sweet
A sauce with noticeable sweetness, often from longer-simmered tomatoes or added sugar. Pairs well with salty toppings.
Tangy
A brighter, more acidic sauce with a tang that cuts through cheese and rich toppings.
Spicy
A sauce with heat — from red pepper flakes, chili, or spicy peppers baked into the sauce.
Traditional
A classic tomato pizza sauce — balanced, seasoned simply, letting the tomatoes speak.
Chunky
A rustic, less-processed sauce with visible tomato pieces and a heartier texture.
Light
A sparingly applied sauce. Less is more — lets the crust, cheese, and toppings shine.
