Topping Generosity

The Yo Slice standard for measuring how generously a restaurant tops its pizza. Because the best crust in the world doesn't matter if they only give you two pieces of sausage.

The Methodology

One Simple Question

Topping Generosity is based on a single, practical question:

"If I cut the pizza into slices, how many pieces of sausage and/or pepperoni am I going to have on my slice?"

No complicated formulas. No secret algorithms. Just count the toppings on your slice. It's the most honest measure of whether a restaurant is generous — or just getting by.

We evaluate this on the OG Sausage & Pepperoni pizza — the baseline order at every restaurant we critique. It's the fairest way to compare, slice to slice.

The Four Levels

1-2
Balanced
3-4
Generous
5-6

7+

Light

1–2 pieces per slice

The restaurant is conservative with toppings. You'll get a taste, but you might find yourself wanting more. On a sausage & pepperoni pizza, this can feel sparse — like they're protecting their margins more than feeding you.

Balanced

3–4 pieces per slice

A fair, even-handed approach. Every bite has toppings, the flavors are well-distributed, and nothing feels skimped. This is the baseline for a well-made pizza — the restaurant does right by you.

Generous

5–6 pieces per slice

The restaurant goes above and beyond. Toppings are plentiful, every bite is loaded, and you can tell they want you to leave satisfied. This is where pizza becomes memorable — the kind of place you recommend to friends.

Maximum generosity. The restaurant piles it on — sometimes to the point where you wonder how the crust holds it all. This is the kind of pizza people drive across state lines for. They are not shy.

How to Read the Badge

Every restaurant on Yo Slice displays a Topping Generosity badge over its image. The pepperoni dots tell you instantly how generous the kitchen is — more dots, more toppings.

Why Generosity Matters

You can have the best crust in the state, the most perfectly balanced sauce, and cheese that melts like a dream — but if the restaurant is stingy with toppings, the pizza falls flat. Generosity is the difference between a good pizza and a great one.

It's also one of the most telling signals about a restaurant's character. A place that loads up your slice cares about feeding you. A place that counts every piece of sausage? That tells you something too.
